With various treatment options, it can be difficult to decide the next step to take. Whether you’re experiencing distress with a mental illness or attempting to overcome an addiction, selecting the right treatment program can greatly assist you in beginning your journey to recovery. A partial-hospitalization program (PHP) is a non-residential program that takes place in a hospital setting. It provides intense support that may be found in a residential program, but for a much shorter period of time – typically less than 24 hours.
Those who need PHP are often people who have already completed a residential or outpatient treatment program and need some structure as they return to home life, or individuals who need assistance with a mental, behavioral, or addiction-related concern that is not severe enough to require the level of support that is provided by other treatment programs. If you need a PHP, it’s important that you have your own living arrangements, as a PHP will not provide housing. This type of program will provide you with medication management, individual and/or group therapy, and family therapy sessions. Medication management is to either place you on medication or to help you find the right medication if your current prescriptions are not providing you with the support you need. Individual, group, and family therapy sessions may help you better understand your experiences, with opportunities to develop tools that could help you better manage your symptoms.
PHPs have been shown to be very effective for those who qualify. A 2014 study conducted by researchers from Massachusetts sought to explore 626 patients’ levels of distress intolerance both before and after receiving treatment from a PHP. Results indicated that distress intolerance of patients reduced drastically; women showed a much higher level of this at the beginning of treatment than men. Participants were also found to have decreased anxiety and depression symptoms after receiving help through a PHP.
