Mental health disorders like anxiety affect the mind as well as the body. Identifying anxious thought processes and other mental symptoms is sometimes a challenge. Anxiety can live more in the body than it does in the mind. Muscle tension, blood pressure, heart rate, and more can indicate the experience of anxiety.

  • Chest pain: Many of the symptoms of anxiety are identical to symptoms people experience during a heart attack. Chest pain is a sign of high anxiety. It is unlikely anything urgent is happening to the heart, like a heart attack. However, raised blood pressure and heart rate can contribute to chest pains.
  • Heart palpitations: Heart palpitations occur when the heart is beating irregularly. Anxious nerves make the heart beat faster, which can cause an irregularity.
  • Feeling unable to breathe: Shortness of breath is common for anxiety especially during an anxiety attack. Chest constrictions, tightening of the diaphragm, and other inhibitors to taking a deep breath, like hyperventilation will make it feel impossible to breathe. Not being able to breathe triggers more fear and anxiety.
  • Lightheadedness: During a particularly anxious moment, it is common to feel dizzy, lightheaded, or experience some vertigo.
